What is Montserrat? Art, spirituality, sport, music, history, gastronomy, traditions, and legends merge in a moving landscape. The monastery is currently active. About eighty Benedictine monks live and work there. Besides the basilica and the monastic buildings, there is a school for children from 6 to 12 years old, “La Escolania”. It is one of the most prestigious and oldest music schools in the world. The children also live in the monastery, and during the week, they sing after mass twice a day. Listening to them sing the Virolai, the hymn of Montserrat is an unforgettable experience.

The Montserrat monastery is located in the heart of Catalonia, one hour driving from Barcelona.

Montserrat is the name of a mountain, a monastery, and the patron virgin of Catalonia. It is a magical place, with a natural environment that transmits extraordinary vibrations. You can reach the monastery by car or by funicular from Monistrol, the village at the bottom of the mountain. Montserrat is one of the most loved and visited places by all Catalans. In a unique natural environment stands a monastery over a thousand years old.

Montserrat is the most common name for women because she is the patron saint of Catalonia.

Our Lady of Montserrat is a black virgin. Charmingly, everybody calls her "La Moreneta".

It is also possible to visit the museum of paintings and biblical antiquities, walking through the mountain, or taste traditional products in the artisan market, such as “mató” (a fresh cheese eaten with honey) or “coca” (a kind of sweet brioche). The Montserrat private tour allows you to visit what interests you most, for as long as you wish. For example, we can get to the Santa Cova (The Holy Cave) or take the rack railway up to the Sant Joan viewpoint,  1,000 m above sea level and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the monastery and magnificent views of the surrounding area and the Pyrenees.

Montserrat is near the Penedès, the wine region where we produce the famous cava. So, combining in the same day the visit to the monastery with a tasting in some cellars or a gourmet tour can be ideal to end the day satisfied, body and soul.

The emblem of the monastery is a mountain cut with a saw. Montserrat literally means sawed mountain.
