The two most important historical moments of Barcelona, which you can not leave without knowing, are: Gothic and Modernism or Art Nouevau. They are the essence of what Barcelona is today. The iconic monuments of the city, the most photographed and beautiful, are undoubtedly the modernist ones. Barcelona is an open-air museum of architecture, especially the neighborhood called “Eixample”. It is the new extension of the city, built mainly between 1890 – 1910.

One of the most important sources of inspiration for Modernism is Gothic, which is why many sculptures look medieval.

The Catalan Modernism a unique and characteristic style. The modernist architecture is much more than decoration and undulating forms. It is not exactly the same as “Art Nouveau”. It is necessary to know the context in which it appeared to understand and appreciate the value that this style has for the city.

There were thousands of artists working at the same time. A whole new city was being built: the Eixample, the extension designed by the engineer Ildefons Cerdà. Antoni Gaudí is Barcelona’s most famous architect. But he is not considered a modernist architect by everybody. Although, he built his works during the modernist period. His style is so peculiar and original that, like all great genius, it is unclassifiable.
